Silent Films is a Romantic drama-edy about Lillian, a museum attendant, and Cade, a deaf Silent Filmmaker who
overcome their communication barrier, their fears and take risks in love and art.

This is a great opportunity to have fun, collaborate and a chance to portray the deaf community in an accurate,
multidimensional way.

Silent Films is a graduate level project, 12 minutes, shot on 16mm. It is a final project and will be screened in Norris Hall in December and
submitted to several film festivals. DVD copy and credit. Shoot dates include September 13, 20, 21, 27, 28, October 3, 4,
5, 10, 11, 12 and November 1.

Cade Scarret: (25)
As a successful deaf silent filmmaker, Cade is confident and isn’t afraid to go after what he wants. One day he meets
Lillian, a spunky museum attendant by day, and self-conscious graffiti artist by night. When sparks fly between the two,
he can’t help but want to get to know her better, the question is, will she let her guard down long enough for him to do
that? He sure has fun trying. Spray paint, police and a little adventure make for a fun lesson in self-expression,
communication and risk in love and art.

[ BERTHE ]
Female 60’s-70’s. Pippin’s grandmother. Warm, strong, and bawdy. Must be strong comic actress and deliver a show stopping song. Vocal Range: Belty mezzo, low F# to A above middle C.

[ FASTRADA ]
Female. 30’s 40’s. Pippin’s step-mother. Devious…crafty, cunning, untrustworthy…but a warm and wonderful mother to Lewis. Strong singer/actress/dancer. Vocal Range: A below middle C to a belty mixed D (9th above middle C).

[ LEWIS ]
Male. Pippin’s half-brother. After Pippin, he is heir to the throne. Addicted to the physical, Lewis loves weight lifting…Lewis loves wrestling…but most of all…Lewis loves Lewis. Must look great without a shirt. Strong singer/dancer/actor. Vocal Range: Baritone or Tenor.

[ CATHERINE ]
Female, 20-30’s. A widow with a small boy and a large estate. A plain, everyday, commonplace, come-what-may, average, ordinary, wonderful girl. Strong singer/dancer/actress. Vocal Range: Low G to a mixed D (9th above middle C), head voice to high G.

ROGER O. HIRSON (Book) Prior to writing PIPPIN, Hirson wrote for such programs as THE KRAFT TELEVISION THEATER, GOODYEAR TELEVISION PLAYHOUSE, PHILCO TELEVISION PLAYHOUSE, and STUDIO ONE. He was twice nominated for Broadway’s Tony Award: in 1967 as co-author of book with Ketti Frings for Best Musical nominee WALKING HAPPY, and in 1973 as Best Book (Musical) for PIPPIN. He went on to write several screenplays, including BRIDGE AT REMAGEN (1969), DEMON SEED (1977), and the teleplay for THE CHRISTMAS CAROL, starring George C. Scott (1984). He is currently retired and living in New York City.

STEPHEN SCHWARTZ (Music and Lyrics): has contributed music and/or lyrics to GODSPELL, PIPPIN , THE MAGIC SHOW, THE BAKER’S WIFE, WORKING (which he also adapted and directed), PERSONALS, RAGS, CHILDREN OF EDEN and the current Broadway hit, WICKED. Most recently, he has contributed songs to MIT EVENTYR, a musical about Hans Christian Andersen currently playing in Denmark. He collaborated with Leonard Bernstein on the English texts for Bernstein’s MASS and wrote the title song for the play and movie BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE. For children, he has written a one-act musical, CAPTAIN LOUIE. For films, he collaborated with Alan Menken on the scores for the Disney animated features POCAHONTAS and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME and wrote the songs for the DreamWorks animated feature THE PRINCE OF EGYPT. He provided music and lyrics for the original television musical, GEPPETTO, and has released two CDs of new songs entitled RELUCTANT PILGRIM and UNCHARTED TERRITORY. Under the auspices of the! ASCAP Foundation, he runs musical theatre workshops in New York and Los Angeles, and is also a member of the Council of the Dramatists’ Guild. Mr. Schwartz is the recipient of three Academy Awards, four Grammy Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, and a tiny handful of tennis trophies.

JEFF CALHOUN (Director/Choreographer): directed and choreographed the award-winning Deaf West production of Big River (Tony and Drama Desk nominations, Best Revival; Drama Desk nomination for Best Director of a Musical; Ovation and L.A. Drama Critics Circle awards for Direction and Choreography). He was a producer as well as director/choreographer for the Broadway production of Brooklyn the Musical. He directed and choreographed the 1994 Broadway revival of Grease! (Tony nomination, Best Choreography) and co-choreographed the Broadway revival of Annie Get Your Gun (Tony Award, Best Revival). His Broadway directing debut was Tommy Tune Tonight, and his collaboration with Mr. Tune led to the 1991 Tony for Best Choreography. He provided the musical staging for the hit Broadway musical Grey Gardens and developed the first original ASL musical, Sleeping Beauty Wakes, at the Kirk Douglas Theater. He is the director of both the national and international productions of Disney’s High School Musical: On Tour. Jeff is an Associate Artist at Ford?s Theatre.

National Theatre of the Deaf be at National Association of the Deaf conference in New Orleans

West Hartford, CT (June 17, 2008] – After a 28 years hiatus, the National Theatre of the Deaf will return to the National Association of the Deaf’s Conference once again with an exhibition booth, to be held between July 7-11th. The last time NTD was at NAD was in 1980, during their Centennial event in Cincinnati, Ohio. Under the new direction of Aaron Kubey, Executive Director, NTD is looking forward to presenting a new face to the community, which will include new works by deaf writers and artists.

Mr. Kubey says, “It’s very important for me that NTD is present at NAD, as I am trying to show the community we are still alive and well on our way back. I need the community’s support to help me make all my visions for NTD come true. I hope that a stronger relationship with the community will come as a result by coming to NAD, meeting and listening to what they have to say, and sharing with them what NTD’s future plans are“.

NTD, whose 40 plus years of existence has been a mainstay of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. From every corner of the globe, while performing in front of local school children, to worldwide acclaim in over 100 countries, which in turn has become as commonplace and important as NAD is.

Bobbie Beth Scoggins, President of The National Association of the Deaf had this to say, “ Our culture is built upon historical achievement by deaf persons. Thirty-nine years and 10,000 performances speaks for itself and is an essential part of the deaf identity. It is a significant part of our culture. While performances by individual persons has its own place, it is the product of the NTD body that is of significance. Old timers will recall with fondness the early years of NTD, newcomers can become part of the current contribution of NTD to our cultural image…and remember it when they become old timers. As a former participant in the NTD Little Theatre of the Deaf years ago, I have a certain fondness for this body. The impact of that experience lingers with me yet. It is this kind of impact that NTD is destined to make in the lives of performers yet to come.

NANCY BLOCH, Executive Director of NAD commented: “It is my hope that hearts will be gladdened by the NTD appearance. While some have said that NTD has struggled in recent years, yet, here is NTD still performing. I hope we can have that certain confidence restored by the NTD appearance at the NAD. There will be much hand waving in this place! NTD had done it again!

The National Theatre of the Deaf’s upcoming season of Little Theatre of the Deaf is seeking two hearing actors who are fluent signers and would like to join the world renown theatre for their upcoming 2008-09 tour. Actors must be at least 18 years old.

TREE WISE(c), Written by Deaf actress Antoinette Abbamonte begins touring around the country in Oct 2009. The story is based on a hearing boy who has Deaf Parents.

Center Theatre Group and Deaf West Theatre company first paired up in 2002 with the 

highly successful presentation at the Mark Taper Forum of Deaf West’s award-winning 

production of Big River, which was subsequently presented as a co-production to rave 

reviews and an extended run on Broadway. The cast received Tony Award Honors for 

Excellence in the Theatre and the production was nominated for Best Revival – Musical. 

Big River returned to Los Angeles on a national tour and was presented at cTG’s 

Ahmanson Theatre in 2004. Some of Deaf West’s other award-winning productions 

include Ovation Award winners Oliver! and A Streetcar Named Desire. Deaf West 

co-produced with Pasadena Playhouse the world premiere of Stephen Sachs’ 

Open Window. Last Spring, CTG & Deaf West brought the world premiere musical 

Sleeping Beauty Wakes to the Kirk Douglas Theatre, under the direction of Jeff calhoun.

The ASL Community Theater is getting ready to produce another ASL Comedy Festivals here in Seattle, Washington.

We plan to ask 5 ASL Comedians to join the festivals. Each comedian is doing 20 minutes. If 4 Comedians, then each will do 30 minutes. Or 2 ASL Magicians doing an hour each.
